Moms Who Write don’t just wake up one day and say, Hey…I’m going to be a writer! For most of us, these dreams are seeded almost before we can speak. So why now? Because moms have dreams too– and they are important.
I have always had stories running through my head, but it wasn’t until last year that I decided to put the words together in a real story.
To be honest, I had no real training on how to write stories beyond what is required in high school. I was determined though and refused to give up on my dream of writing a book.
Have I become a professional? No.
Have I finished a book? No again.
Do I have the secret to a best seller? Not at all.
What I DO have is a compiled list of tips, tricks, and advice from other authors that I have found very helpful and motivating.
Don’t delete scenes
If you don’t like it, copy and paste it to a separate document. Those words may come in handy later.
Similar is not the same
Don’t be discouraged by other books that may seem similar to yours. There are really no new ideas, but there are plenty of ideas that haven’t been written by you.
Be flexible
Life happens, give yourself grace. If you have to step away from your novel and get your creative juices flowing through a different story, DO IT!
Write as much as you can
Try to write something every day. It may not be for your WIP, maybe it’s a journal entry or a meaningful social media post. Use your words!
Help is not your enemy
Ask for help. Find a peer group. Whether they are family, friends, or other writers that you can talk ideas out with, and get feedback.
The magic is only in your book
There is no “right” way to do anything. No magic trick to get published, or build an audience. Anything can work if you execute it well.
First drafts are terrible…and it’s ok
Finish the first draft. Will it be perfect? Absolutely not, but get it out there and worry about one step at a time.
Start small
Set small goals, and then celebrate when you meet them.
Own your story
Your story is yours. There will always be people that don’t believe in it, or enjoy it. Take advice and criticism, but stay true to the story you want to tell.
Write from the heart
You can write a story using simple words. Using big or fancy words doesn’t make or break your book. Write your story as if you are telling your story to friends around a campfire.
Never give up!
At the end of the day the most important thing is that you NEVER give up on your dream! Life is hard. Motherhood is hard. But moms have dreams that are just as important as anyone else’s.
