Moms Who Write

Submissions are now open for the first ever Moms Who Write anthology!

October 22, 2021January 1, 2022 by Allie Gravitt

It’s time. We’ve discussed this forever. But submissions are finally open for the first ever Moms Who Write anthology! Our friends at Our Galaxy Publishing have been a huge support from the beginning and will be alongside us as we build something beautiful. All of the proceeds will be donated to the Imagination Library. If you haven’t read about them, they’re awesome.

This is open for short stories, essays, poetry, art, and photography.

The goal is to tell your story. We want to reflect the reality of momming and being a woman right now. There are so many who are where you are and need to hear your stories. How you’re doing the thing. How you maybe didn’t do the thing, but learned from it.

Here are some ideas:

  • Career shifts. Maybe you left a job. Maybe you ended up somewhere you never thought you’d be. Who knows. Regardless, this is an important part of our story and can change the trajectory of our lives. Let’s hear it.
  • Motherhood journeys. Some of you never thought you’d be a mom. Or you never thought you’d have so many kids. Some of you really wanted to be a mom and it was harder than you thought it would be. Honesty is critical—you aren’t the first person to feel this way, so tell us what your experience was like.
  • Deconstruction. Maybe you struggled with society and the demands of other people. Things you thought you were supposed to do or not supposed to do. How did you tear them apart? Are you afraid to pull at that thread?
  • Hope and expectations. Life throws us a million curve balls. How did you adjust? How did you redefine what success was for you? Are you struggling to do that? What is something you always thought you needed but realized that life is fine—or better—without it?
  • Your why. Why are you writing? Why are there stories you have to tell? Or why do you make art? What are you building?

There is no minimum word count, but try to keep it under 3k words.

Submit by filling out the Google form here. Submissions will be open through Dec. 31, 2021. Unfortunately, we will not be able to publish every submission.

We’re so excited to go on this journey with you! Thanks for sharing your words with us for the first ever Moms Who Write anthology!

This is so exciting! Are there any parameters for how many submissions a single author can send in?

Hi! Scrolling through the posts and wondering if this was answered? I see up to three poems are allowed… not sure about other pieces – essays, etc? Is there a limit to three submissions for those genres as well? Or just one? Thanks!

    Thank you for this!
Just submitted a poem, entitled “Soar” early this morning.
Authoring is lonely business, especially when your kids are in college.

Argh. My story is in a pages doc. I can’t figure out how to transfer into a google doc.

Will we hear back if our submission is not accepted? Is there an anticipated date this would likely occur by?

Assuming you mean something that is previously published, you’d need to make sure you’re within the rights of your previous publisher. We’re not asking for exclusivity.

I submitted a poem. Yay! (Cross your fingers I did the google doc thing correctly.) I also have an essay on this topic, are multiple submissions allowed? If not, as an editor, I get it!

I wonder the same thing. I have multiple poems in the subject. Can I submitt more than one, leaving them to (hopefully) chose one?

Hi !I just wrote a short story really close to my heart and very quickly as I have just joined the group and wanted to enter it before the deadline! I am rubbish at tech and I am a bit concerned that I haven’t managed to submit it properly with the Google form! Is there an email address I could send it to as well, just in case?!
    Kind Regards

    Hello!
I am not sure if this is the best place to get my answer as quickly as I need with the time cutting so close, but I will try. I read that we can submit 3 pieces, I just did that but I put all my links (with spaces between) in one submission. I fear that it may submit as gobbly-gook but also didn’t know if you wanted 3 separate entry forms. Please advise me if I should resubmit with one google link per entry. Thank You!

Hello. I’d used the Google form link to submit three poems one after another. However, I didn’t have Google document links to paste into the spot asking for them, because I don’t use Google docs. I cut/pasted my poem into that area instead each time, and wondered if that’s okay. If not, is there an email address to which I can submit my poems?

I had posted the above as a comment early this morning, but when I just looked, I no longer saw my earlier comment. I asked the above in your FB group, too (trying to make sure I get my poems in before it’s too late).
