When our group set out to create our first anthology, The Order of Us, we knew we wanted to create something beautiful and powerful– inspiring. We wanted the book to connect with every reader who laid their eyes on it, in more ways than one. And when it came down to where to direct the profits from this beauty, we knew our actions had to be just as meaningful. We decided to donate all the proceeds to an organization that we all felt dearly about: Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
Last week, Moms Who Write was able to make our first donation of $1042.42 to this incredible organization. The Imagination Library is dedicated to getting books into the hands of children all over the world and as moms and writers, we understand the power of books. The strength they instill, the messages they teach, and the tireless effort that goes into creating each story can shape lives.
Reading to our children is one of the most magical things we can do, especially at a stage of life when imagination runs rampant, and the Imagination Library has made it their mission to get the stories to the children who need them the most.
What is the Imagination Library
Starting in 1995, the Imagination Library is a gifting program that mails free, high-quality books to children ages birth to five, no matter what type of annual income the family receives. The demand for the program grew quickly, first serving only Dolly Parton’s home county in Tennesse and quickly growing into a nationwide sensation by 2000.
By 2003, the Imagination Library had mailed 1,000,000 books to kids across the globe and has continued to expand into countries around the world. To date, the organization has gifted over 184,615,046 books to deserving children, all lost in the magic of storytelling.
How Does the Imagination Library Work?
The Imagination Library currently serves families in the United States, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, and the United Kingdom, each operating a little differently. In the United States, here’s the gist of it:
Basically, this organization is a connected network of individuals, businesses, schools, and other organizations all banding together to work towards getting quality, age-appropriate books into the hands of children. Study after study has shown that reading to children and reading as a child has countless benefits for the growth and development of the mind.
If you want to sign your family up to participate in the Imagination Library, check to see if you can register in your area here. Note: Not every state will have access, but the organization continues to expand every year.
