If you’re looking for a feel-good story about finding love and personal redemption, then look no further than Living Water by MWW member Allison Wells. I seriously could not put it down!
A Modern-Day Biblical Retelling
For those familiar will Ms. Wells’s work, you’ll know she’s a clean romance and Christian fiction author. Living Water is a combination of the two. Ms. Well beautifully retells the bible story of the Woman at the Well in a modern setting. She goes more in-depth than what Scripture gives us and dares to imagine why the nameless woman ended up with five husbands and a spoiled reputation.
Roxie, modeled after the woman who encounters Jesus, is just looking for love. She finds it once, maybe twice, but mostly, she’s looking in the wrong places. After a chance encounter with a stranger, Roxie’s life is forever changed, and she finds purpose and redemption.
A Relatable Main Character
Roxie’s story is the story of so many women. Shy and unassuming, she has always been the black sheep in her family, and that need to feel wanted follows her throughout her life. Roxie jumps head-first into relationships, thinking that’s where she’ll find happiness. But it’s just a slew of bad choices.
What Ms. Wells does with Roxie, though, is make her loveable. It’s easy to write a character that is the sum of their choices, but I never thought of Roxie as a bad person—not once. Her pain and longing are evident, and the reader simply has to root for her.
Ms. Well imbued Roxie with so many relatable characteristics that, regardless of your story, you’ll see something of yourself in Roxie.
Check Out Living Water Now!
The writing is clean and uncomplicated, but Roxie and her story are not without their complexities. Readers aren’t hit over the head with religion and Scripture, but for those familiar with the story, you’ll notice similarities. If you like feel-good, clean romance, Living Water is a must-read!
